Originally established as a stop over route for grain and wool being delivered by horse and cart from Port Augusta to Adelaide, Wilmington was once known as Beautiful Valley. There are some interesting colonial buildings, including the original police station (1880) which is now a private residence and some old coaching stables behind the Wilmington Hotel. The Beautiful Valley Aussie Relic Museum is well worth a visit

At the beginning of the stunning Horrocks Pass through Mount Magnificent to Port Augusta and bordering the Mount Remarkable National Park, Wilmington is only a 10 minute drive from Alligator Gorge, with its unusual rock formations and crystal clear mountain pools. Steps enable visitors to get down to the bottom of the gorge, where in some places, the walls are only two metres apart. The water-worn rock leads right through the ranges to Mambray Creek, offering some of the best walking trails in the Flinders Ranges.

Wilmington is a town with a strong local community, close to the facilities of Quorn, Port Augusta, Booleroo Centre and Orroroo, surrounded by historic places to visit and just a day trip from the iconic Flinders Ranges.
